what's "snow falling on cedars"?

"Snow Falling on Cedars" a book written by David Guterson, which was then turned into a major motion picture. Both the film and the novel that revolves around the murder of a German fisherman in the fictional town of San Piedro, Washington. It takes place not long after World War Two, and as the accused is a Japanese man (Kazuo Miyamoto), many racial intolerances are experienced throughout the town and many are preconvinced that the Japanese man is guilty of the crime. As the trial unfolds, an American reporter (Ishmael Chambers) unravels the mystery of the crime. However, he is unsure of whether or not to come forward with his findings, as his first and only love (Hatsue Imada) is married to Kazuo, and if the he is convicted, Ishmael may be able to get together with Hatsue once again.

The movie stars Ethan Hawke as Ishmael Chambers, Youki Kudoh as Hatsue Imada, Rick Yune as Kazuo Miyamoto, and Daniel von Bargen as Carl Heine. It is directed by Scott Hicks.
